When planning a garden transformation, it is easy to get distracted by the "soft" elements—the plants, the furniture, and the lighting. But the real star of the show, the element that defines the structure and usability of your space, is the paving.
Your patio is the floor of your outdoor room. It needs to look beautiful, stand up to the British weather, and suit your lifestyle. But with so many options on the market, from sleek Porcelain to rustic Sandstone, how do you choose?
At DBG Projects, we have laid thousands of square meters of paving across Yorkshire. Here is our expert guide to choosing the perfect material for your project.
1. Porcelain: The Modern, Low-Maintenance Choice
If you want a sleek, contemporary look that stays looking new for years with minimal effort, Porcelain is the undisputed champion.
The Look: Crisp lines, consistent colours, and a high-end finish. Because it is a manufactured product, you can get it in a huge range of styles, including stone effects and wood grains.
The Pros: It is incredibly tough. Porcelain is non-porous, meaning it resists moss, algae, and stains (red wine spills wipe right off!). It is also frost-proof and fade-resistant.
The Cons: It requires a specialist installation method (using a bonding slurry) to adhere correctly to the mortar bed, so it must be laid by experienced professionals like the DBG team.
2. Indian Sandstone: The Timeless All-Rounder
Indian Sandstone remains the most popular choice for UK gardens, and for good reason. It offers a beautiful, natural finish that works in both traditional cottage gardens and modern spaces.
The Look: Each slab is unique, with natural veining and fossil prints. It comes in a spectrum of warmth, from the greys of "Kandla Grey" to the multi-coloured warmth of "Rippon Buff."
The Pros: It provides excellent value for money and has a natural, textured surface that is grippy underfoot.
The Cons: Being a natural stone, it is porous. It requires sealing to prevent staining and will weather/soften over time, developing a "lived-in" character.
3. Yorkshire Stone: The Heritage Heavyweight
For properties in our local area, nothing beats the authenticity of genuine Yorkshire Stone. Whether reclaimed or newly quarried, it screams quality and heritage.
The Look: Rugged, substantial, and unmistakably local. It anchors a house into the landscape like nothing else.
The Pros: It is incredibly durable and actually looks better with age. It adds significant value to period properties and barn conversions.
The Cons: It is a premium product with a price tag to match, but for the right property, it is an investment worth making.
4. Cobbles & Setts: The Texture Creators
Paving isn't just about large slabs. Granite setts, sandstone cobbles, and limestone bricks are perfect for breaking up large areas, edging driveways, or creating winding paths.
The Look: Detailed, intricate, and full of character.
The Usage: We often use these as "accent" features—bordering a smooth porcelain patio with rugged granite setts creates a stunning textural contrast that elevates the whole design.
5. Concrete Block Paving: The Practical Solution
While mostly used for driveways, high-quality block paving can be a fantastic option for garden paths and utility areas.
The Look: Uniform and neat. Modern versions (like "tegula" blocks) offer a tumbled, aged look that works well in courtyards.
The Pros: Cost-effective, extremely durable, and easy to repair (individual blocks can be lifted and replaced).
The Golden Rule: Samples and Light
Never pick a paving stone from a picture on the internet. Stone changes colour when wet and looks different in bright sunlight versus shade. We always recommend viewing physical samples in your own garden to see how they react to the specific light levels of your property.
Summary: It’s All in the Installation
The most expensive Porcelain will crack if laid on a weak sub-base, and the most beautiful Sandstone will wobble if not pointed correctly.
At DBG Projects, we treat what goes under the paving with as much care as the paving itself. We ensure the correct sub-base depths, drainage falls, and mortar mixes are used, guaranteeing that your new patio remains level and solid for decades.
